Agencies uncover hidden insights with a D&B data analysis
Federal agencies are taking advantage of a data analysis offered by the D&B Government Solutions team to reveal hiddenand often times, surprisinginsights from their database. Agency reaction has been overwhelming positive to these custom analyses. The question to ask is how well do you know what's in your database? Just imagine how actionable an analysis of your own agency information could be if...
- Contracting specialists discover a critical supplier is predicted to fail within the year?
- Regulatory auditors discover a business is foreign owned and considered high risk?
- Analysts discover a business is associated with criminal activity or displaying patterns of fraud?
Take a look at insights from an analysis based on our active business population in the U.S. Not only does this highlight what you might expect in your agency data analysis, but it also begins to demonstrate the depth of our information. Your data analysis may include these and/or similar insights:
- 2,559,647 U.S. businesses linked to corporate families (8,895,794 worldwide)
- 133,872 U.S. businesses foreign owned (670,477 worldwide)
- 2,340 debarred from doing business with the U.S. Government
- 27,736,153 U.S. businesses have fewer than 25 employees
- 59,280 U.S. businesses are predicted to fail in the next 12 months

Data integration: A complex process made simple
Every government agency wants to have the most accurate and complete data so they can make better decisions to achieve agency missions. An integrated view of the businesses in an agency database enables you to tackle mission critical issues including: How do I prioritize resources for inspections or investigations based on ownership or high risk? What is the total exposure associated with potential loan or grant recipients? How can I aggregate total spend to improve negotiating leverage with a contractor? How can I effectively conduct outreach campaigns to businesses impacted by new regulation?
The challenge is that cleansing, standardizing and maintaining agency information is difficult because businesses are complex and the data changes very frequently. For example, on average:
- Businesses have multiple addresses and names1 to 4 names, many of which are not even visually similar
- Businesses moveat least 20% in a year for U.S.-based businesses; more frequently in emerging markets
- Businesses use multiple names and addresses to identify customers within different databases and customers may be represented by multiple identifiers
- Businesses are often linked through complex legal family trees and/or a franchise or minority ownership relationship
- Businesses merge, get acquired and/or acquire other businesses
The solution is data integrationa solution agencies are using to help aggregate data from a variety of disparate databases and systems to create a more comprehensive view of entities. A successful implementation requires the right software and technology and effective data governance. But the true power of data integration and driving the right decisions lies with the quality of the data that fuels the data integration.
The key to a single view of a business is based on reliable informationin an actual or virtual repositorywhere accurate information can be consolidated from around the agency, cleansed, enriched, and then maintained so that it remains current. To achieve this, you need third party validation.
As an external source, D&B is helping agencies solve their data challenges by supplementing and enhancing their internal business data and providing data quality assurance. We can match all of your internal files against our global universe of 117 million records to:
- Reconcile multiple names and addresses
- Apply a unique identifier (D-U-N-S® Number) to link all of the variants on names and addresses within your multiple databases
- Provide corporate linkage information so you can understand the relationships between entities
- Add predictive indicator information to assess the risk associated with an entity
- Track business change, name and address changes, other firmographic information and acquisitions and mergers over time
