Business Impact of Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill |
The environmental impact has been obvious but the direct and indirect economic impacts in the coastal areas of the five Gulf States are not yet fully known. To help understand the potential economic impact, D&B has prepared a preliminary analysis for the Gulf States, finding:
-
7.3 million active businesses may be impacted in AL, FL, LA, MS, and TX, possibly affecting 34.4 million employees, $5.2 trillion in economic activity and 5.9 million small businesses (most having less than 10 employees)
-
36% of all employees in the Gulf States are tied to businesses located in coastal counties
-
37% ($1.951 trillion) of the total sales volume across all industries in the Gulf States occurs in coastal counties
Potential Business Impact for Gulf States
D&B has also prepared analyses of the business impact on jobs, sales volume and top industries in the five affected states - Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.
For example, in Louisiana, of the 2.8M employees, 64% are tied to businesses located in coastal parishes. Among the five Gulf States, Louisiana has the highest proportion of its total employees in coastal parishes. Although the unemployment rates in LA is below the national 9.9% average and some people directly impacted by the oil spill are finding immediate employment in clean-up efforts, the long term impacts to the unemployment rates in LA will surely be a negative one.

Improved Commercial Credit Score Yields 9% Predictive Lift
On August 9, 2010, D&B will introduce an enhanced, highly predictive Commercial Credit Score 8.0 (CCS 8.0), offering improved predictiveness, especially on micro and small businesses with less than 15 employees.
D&B has joined forces with TransUnion to enhance D&B's commercial information and insight with consumer credit data to further enable agencies to Decide with Confidence. TransUnion manages credit histories on more than 500 million consumers around the globe. Coupled with D&B's global database of over 169 million business records, and proprietary DUNSRight® Quality Process, CCS 8.0 provides a 9% predictive lift when analyzing risk associated with small businesses.
We are committed to providing a smooth transition to the enhanced Commercial Credit Score. If you have questions, you can email us at government@dnb.com, contact your D&B Relationship Manager or our Government Customer Service Center at 1.800.424.2495.

Exciting Technology Investments on the Horizon
The rapid advances in technology have caused customers to increase their expectations on how we conduct business. You have told us you want flexibility, 2-way interactivity, available everywhere (always on) and consumer grade interfaces.
In response, we are making a strategic investment of 3-year $110 million dollars to maximize product, data and technology. Last month, you heard about our data improvements - and now we wanted to share our technology and product plans. Our focus is two-fold:
This investment will transform how you experience D&B with more product innovation, "everywhere" availability, the ability to embed D&B data in non-D&B application and workflows, and improved data quality with new data sets in near real time. To learn more, contact us.

Your Feedback Drives Improvements at D&B
As always, your feedback is important to us. The more customers who tell us how we are doing, the more we can improve your experience with D&B. In addition to significant technology changes mentioned above, your feedback from previous Voice of the Customer surveys have resulted in creation of our Government Gold Service Center, improved investigations process, D&B's billing transformation, more coverage internationally and with small businesses, and updated financial statements. In August, you will get another chance to tell us how we are doing. Our mid-year customer survey will run from August 4th - 18th. Please take a few minutes and let us know how we are doing. Or in the meantime, you can tell us now, and we'll act. 1.800.424.2495. |
